Ryan has a yearly black tie dinner for his work. I go. I like the people that he works with. I talk. Food's not bad. I eat. So what is the problem, you ask? If I am to go in appropriate black tie wear then I must shop. These days, shopping is a rare occasion and unless I am at a store where I can find toilet paper, toothpaste, shoes for my whole family, get an oil change, and a haircut, all in one stop, then I don't go there. I go to other places rarely and only if I am shopping with a purpose. I am finding it hard to get out to shop for this purpose of finding an evening gown/ish MODEST dress. For those who don't know...I'm Mormon. This means that I have funny undies that are a little bit trickier to keep covered up. This past Friday Ryan and I purposefully shopped for awhile. We determined that if I am to go to this function, then I may be forced to wear something Golden Girl-esque. It seems that cap (or any at all) sleeves and covered cleavage just aren't "in" this season. There is seriously NOTHING in between teenage hooker and Golden Girls bolero jacket. Look out Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan, here I come...

Don't be fooled...that Rue was a floozy for her age. I remember seeing some wrinkly cleavage from that broad.
Well I have a black number I had to wear for my brother in laws wedding. It was strapless so I made a bolero to go over it. I think it looked cute and not too "I'm trying to cover up my g's-ish"...if you know what I'm sayin...
When is this affair anyway? I'm not sure what your size is but I would totally send my get up to you if you want to check it out. I even have fancy shoes that I only wore for like four hours.
1. I love that you used WIKIPEDIA as your reliable source for what to wear to a black tie affair.
2. Because of your blog, I am now writing a second song for Cole that might be the same tune and mostly the same words as Ingrid Michaelson's Giving Up.
3. For the remainder of the day, I will be online shopping for a non-Golden Girls-esque dress. Consider it done....unless you have a budget. :)
Didn't Shade (or some other LDS company) make little black dresses for a while? It seems as if they did. Maybe it would be worth checking out! :)
i just bought this dress in dark brown for my sister in laws wedding, and i love it! (there's a long one as well) http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WeddingParties/womens/w_littleblackdress/PRDOVR~96061/96061.jsp

you have to get it online (which is scary), but i really like jcrew dresses, and you can get them in different colors. anyway... there's always promos going on, so if you decide to do something at jcrew let me know and i'll see what promos i can find. :) anyway, not sure what your budget is, but i love jcrew. good luck!
Wow! Thank you all for your wonderful offers(jessica!) tips and suggestions/emails! They are giving me some hope:)! Janaya, i can't get the links to work. Will you send them again or tell me the names of the dresses?
Remi, are you mocking my use of Wikipedia:)? my blog inspired a song??? or did project playlist inspire a song? don't spend too much finding a dress for me, but let me know what you find:).
Thanks again everyone...let me know if you have more wonderful ideas/sites/...I'm open.
which golden girl am i? we should start our own company for the inbetweeners
Come on!! You of all people cannot find a good deal on a cute outfit??!!! Then I have no hope to dress 'cute' everyday!! sweats it is.
I'm emailing you some cute options, but let's be honest.....you could wear a bath mat and kleenex boxes on your feet and still look stunning!!
Nat! I love your blog, it always makes me laugh!! If you're interested, I have a black dress that I just wore for my sis-in-law's wedding...it's probably too big for you, but you're welcome to come try it on. It's definitely black-tie appropriate, call me!
have you looked on Shabby Apple? They have way cute dresses. here: http://www.shabbyapple.com/t-apparel.aspx
Also look in the non-black dresses. there's one called "Slate" hat is a tuxedo dress that's cute. I've never bought anything, but a girl can dream can't she?
I think that even if you went dressed like a golden girl...you of all people could pull it off! I have this gorgeous grayish dress that would look AWESOME on you. It's from the Black and White Store. It's modest and classy. I'll see if I have a pic to email you. I've sadly had to retire it due to this little critter bursting at my seams. I'm not sure but is it possible for you to have a baby "bump" on your bum too???? :)
I feel your pain!
I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but I LOVE YOU NAT! You make me laugh so hard! I completely frrl you pain on the shopping thing. If it's not Wal Mart one stop shopping, I don't have time. Aso, finding modest clothing that does not look like it belongs on the runway at a nursing home is impossible. Have you talked to Tifini Nally? She can make ANYTHING!
I hear ya! I bought myself a LBD (little black dress) for just such an occasion, but it turns out that even if it did fit me, we never have those occasions...
Try Nordstrom.com, and my personal favorite website for everything under the sun (it's totally reliable) is:
www.emailyourfriendalicauseshemissesyou.com
give it a try, I think you'll find something.
This may sound weird but when I was little I use to have a HUGE crush on Blanch! I thought she was so sexy...
That was Cole not Remi that said the last comment right? Just checking.=) Cooper and I watched The Golden Girls on one of our first dates New Years Eve 1995.
did you find a dress yet???? You are so funny Natalie...i guess it's been a while since I've been shopping for a formal dress and even then...it was "pre-marriage" so i wasn't exactly looking for one with sleeves...sorry. i can't believe you got your babysitters to organize for you...what are their names and numbers again? You actually got babysitters too! Nat...we're making progress..lol
You have to let all of us know what you find. There's you next blog!
